Frequently asked questions

How do Gear Shack rentals work?


To get started, browse our selection of gear at gearshackoutdoors.com at least 10 days before your adventure. Add everything you need to your cart, select the dates you plan to use the gear, and check out. We will ship your gear to arrive 1-3 days prior to your adventure. Gear can be shipped to your home or to your destination. Once your adventure has ended, attach the included pre-addressed return label to the original box and drop off at any UPS location the day after your adventure to avoid any late fees.




Do transit days count toward my rental days?


No, transit time will never count toward your rental period. For example, if you rent gear from Friday-Sunday, you will only be charged the 1-3 day rental rate, even though transit time to and from your location is likely 2-4 days each way. We will always ship your gear to arrive 1-3 days prior to your rental start date or your rental is free. We ask that you ship it back to us the day after your rental ends in order to avoid late fees.




What payment types are accepted?


We accept all major credit cards. You will be charged in full upon completion of your online order.




What happens if I return gear late?


Gear must be dropped off a UPS location and postmarked the day after your rental period ends. Any customer who does not return gear within this timeframe may be charged a late fee of $50/day in addition to the rental cost of the gear. If the gear is not returned within 10 days, your credit card will be charged for the full retail price of the gear, including taxes and shipping, if applicable.




How far in advance can I place my order?


There is no limit on how far in advance you can place your order - the earlier the better. In order to ensure we have the gear you desire in stock, it is especially important to allow as much time as possible during the 'busy' months (late Spring-early Fall).




What is your cancellation policy?


We understand that plans can change. If you cancel two weeks or more before the start of your rental period, we will provide a full refund. Any cancellations made within two weeks are not eligible for a refund.




How do you clean your gear?


Gear Shack is 100% committed to offering only premium quality gear in excellent condition. Cleaning and maintaining gear is a big part of what we do. All gear is inspected and then hand-cleaned after each rental. Sleeping bags are professionally cleaned after every use.




How do I calculate my rental period?


When determining rental periods, we count the number of days you will be using the gear - not nights. For example, if you want to start using your gear on a Friday, and plan to return to civilization on a Sunday, we consider that 3 rental days, which would qualify you for the 3 day rental rate. If you start using your gear on a Friday, and return to civilization on Monday, you would be charged for a 7 day rental. For any rental, we require that gear be shipped back no later than one day after you return from your adventure.
